Some big name Chinese rock releases have come out lately (see Music from the Middle Kingdom, above), and it looks like there are more still to come (in case you’re wondering, yes, Shanghai bands will be getting into the action as well!) Miniless plans to continue its streak with albums from several local bands (hey, they’re practically a Shanghai label): Boojii, 8 Eye Spy and Muscle Snog (which will be a joint release with Beijing’s Maybe Mars label). Maybe Mars (home of Carsick Cars et al), of course, will also continue to proliferate on the northern end – expect new Snapline and AV Okubo albums soon.
The folks at Soma are also hard at work, as always: in addition to the series of performances by Soma bands at Channel One’s Summer Rock event (see Nightlife events), they’re also preparing an album from local instrumental trio Triple Smash, which is slated for release at the end of this month. Expect an album release tour in September, kicking off in Shanghai.
The album that everyone’s still waiting for, the fabled 0093 compilation, is also promised for the end of next month. Whether or not it’ll be pushed back again, there’s at least been some encouraging news recently: 5 Point Star reports that they’ve just finished recording their contribution, a track entitled ‘Monologue (Duibai),’ which will also be released as a single.
0093 stalwarts Top Floor Circus will be making a rare appearance at the free Daning Music Festival this month. Organizers also report that the festival may be a warm-up for a larger local event in October, possibly featuring Cui Jian – a welcome bit of news considering the failed plans for the ambitious One Festival, which was supposed to happen this month. From the ashes of that, however, Emma Ticketmaster has lined up yet another China tour for Linkin Park, in Shanghai on August 15.
