LAVA|OX|SEA Next Episode: Lord. Smart vs Dr. Jin
Having reinvented themselves last year (they were previously known as The Los), this quartet from Heifei have been making plenty of local appearances of late. This is their fourth album from Miniless Records and first full-length studio effort (their previous release, Heavy Metal Rock is the Best Music, was recorded live at Yuyintang last December). Produced by Yang Haisong of PK14.

Carsick Cars You Can Listen, You Can Talk
The sophomore release from China’s most famous band – you know there’s a big name attached to this, and here it is: Wharton Tiers, Sonic Youth’s producer. Should we have expected less from these friends-of-Thurston? This second release finds the noise-pop trio in the groove, with lead axeman Zhang Shouwang finally figuring out where to effectively put all that feedback.

Brain Failure Downtown Production
The fourth album from this long-standing Beijing street punk band, featuring their single ‘Box on the  Broken Ball,’ which includes a verse from Chuck D (invited courtesy of the track’s producer, Brian Hardgroove, who also happens to be Public Enemy’s touring bandleader) and shows off the band’s new rap-rock tendencies.

Berwin is a living legend

Fading Horizon Name It Yourself
One of Miniless Records’ newer acts, this experimental, layered-fuzz band from Nanjing offer up nine tracks for their studio debut. It marks a step up in the production department for both the band and the label – Fading Horizon’s initial release (off Miniless) was simply a bootleg of their live debut, recorded in September 2007 at Yuyintang.

Hi Margaret, each of these bands has their own myspace page, with a few songs that you can stream and listen to for free. But of course, it doesn't hurt to support local acts -- both Carsick Cars and Brain Failure albums can be purchased internationally at the iTunes store, while Miniless Records are available (only domestically) from their online store (http://miniless.ycool.com), or at various music joints around town (if you're in Shanghai). But sometimes they'll even post albums for download at their site, so check 'em out!
