With campuses in Longyang, Hongqiao and Lujiazui, Fortune is a friendly, community-oriented kindergarten. The school encourages parent involvement through committee work, volunteer opportunities, a school diary and easy access to the faculty. The bilingual program strives to turn youngsters into global citizens, with a focus on both academic and personal learning.

Julia Gabriel Centre for Learning, 75 Wuxing Lu (6437 3773,  www.juliagabriel.com). Zhuli Keber Youeryuan, 嘉宝幼儿园 (吴兴路75号).
Utilizing an innovative, Singapore-based learning program, this school offers pre-K programs and a full-time kindergarten. The kindergarten teaches children to “express their best selves,” as a means of fostering creativity, moral values, and a love of learning.

Learning Habit Bilingual Kindergarten, Villa C, 1980 Hongqiao Lu (6262 7668, www.learninghabitat.org.cn). Xuezhiyuan Shuangyu Youeryuan, 学之园双语幼儿园 (虹桥路1980号蓝天别墅C幢).
This Hong Kong-based school grounds its program in the Reggio Emilia Approach, which stresses children’s relationship to their environment as a learning tool. Each classroom is a staffed with one native English-speaking and one Chinese-speaking teacher for a bilingual immersion experience.

Little Eton Bilingual Kindergarten, 592 Wanping Nan Lu (64690445. www.little-eton.com). Xiaoyidun Shuangyu Youzhiyuan, 小伊顿双语幼稚园 (宛平南路592号).
Little Eton utilizes a combination of American and Chinese instructional methods to allow for “teaching through play and learning through work.” Parent involvement is considered crucial.

Montessori School of Shanghai, 21 Donghu Lu (5403 7699. www.montessorisos.com). Shanghai Sili Mengdesuoli Youeryuan, 上海私立蒙特梭立幼儿园 (东湖路21号).
Not only does this school adhere to the Montessori teaching philosophy, but all Western teachers are also Montessori certified. Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace. Classes are bilingual and mixed-age, with older students serving as role models for their younger classmates.

Okiki Kindergarten, 35, Lane 205 Fenggu Lu (6102 3040, www.okiki.com). Hujiwan Youeryuan, 胡姬港湾幼儿园 (徐汇区丰谷路205弄35号).
Strong management and locations throughout China speak to the professional, responsive administration. The curriculum forges a link between Chinese and Singaporean teaching methods; children are encouraged to pursue their individual interests and develop their unique talents.

Shanghai Victoria Kindergarten, 81, Lane 3297 Hongmei Lu (6405 6668, www.victoria.sh.cn). Shanghai Weihua Youeryuan, 上海维华幼儿园 (虹梅路3297弄81号).
This Hong Kong-based kindergarten has over 40 years experience in Mainland China. The academic program blends Chinese methods with the IB Primary Years Program. The school stresses an active role for parents and close cooperation between parents and teachers.

International and local students are given a strong moral code that provides the foundation for their academic and personal development. The Montessori-influenced curriculum allows for a holistic education.

Stars and Stripes English Kindergarten, 138 Yingbin San Lu (6268 3957, www.starsandstripes.com.cn). Xinshiji Hongqiao Youeryuan, 新世纪虹桥幼儿园 (迎宾三路138号).
The excellent faculty creates a warm, family environment at this American kindergarten. All teachers hold degrees in Early Childhood Education from American universities. With a belief that every child has a unique learning style, discovery-based learning and parent involvement are core values. 


International Schools (K-12/nursery-13, unless otherwise noted)

British International School, 111 Jinguang Lu, Minhang (5226 3211, www.bissshanghai.com). Shanghai Yingguo Guoji Xuexiao, 上海英国国际学校(闵行 金光路111号).
The British National Curriculum is used to educate children from Pre-nursery through Year 13. Though the curriculum and textbooks used are British, much attention is paid to the local context. With high-quality facilities at four different campuses, a well-established IB Program and many extracurricular activities, BISS is regarded as a community-oriented, student-friendly school.

Concordia International School, 999 Mingyue Lu, Jinqiao (5899 0380, www.ciss.com.cn). Shanghai Xiehe Guoji Xuexiao, 上海协国际学校 (金桥 明月路999号).
At this selective school, an American curriculum and AP courses prepare students for success in university. Technology is integrated into the learning process, with laptops for all students and teachers trained to make the most of them. This is a non-denominational Christian community which educates the spirit as well as the mind. Classes are offered from Pre-K through grade12.

Dulwich College Shanghai, 266 Lan’an Lu, Jinqiao (5899 9910, www.dulwich-shanghai.cn). Shanghai Deweishi Xuexiao) 上海德威士学校 (金桥 蓝桉路266号).
Drawing on the rich history of its British namesake, Dulwich provides an excellent education grounded in the British National Curriculum. Teacher credentials are excellent, and classroom learning is supplemented with extensive co-curricular activities. The kindergarten is located on a separate campus, adjacent to the junior and senior schools.

Livingston American School, 580 Ganxi Lu, Changning (6238 3511, www.laschina.org). Liwensidun Meiguo Xuexiao, 李文斯顿美国学校 (长宁 甘溪路580号).
Productive world citizens are shaped through educational opportunities that develop academic ability, cultural appreciation, physical well-being and social development. The school, set up by former US Congressman Robert Livingston, offers small class sizes, a graduated ESL program and AP courses.

Rainbow Bridge International School, 2381 Hongqiao Lu (6268 9773, www.rbischina.org). Caihongqiao Guoji Xuexiao) 彩虹桥国际学校 (虹桥路2381号).
Located inside the Shanghai Zoo, Rainbow Bridge offers not only a unique setting, but also an intergrated science program and after-school activities at the zoo. Respect is taught both for fellow students and for the earth and its diverse species. Classes are offered from early childhood through grade 5.

Shanghai American School (6221 1445, www.saschina.org). Shanghai Meiguo Xuexiao, 上海美国学校

China’s largest international school has two campuses that cover Pre-K through high school. With both AP and IB options, SAS prepares students for top American universities. The challenging core curriculum, use of technology, well-balanced co-curricular activities, and community service programs all work to develop students’ full potential.

Shanghai Community International School (www.scischina.org). Shanghai Guoji Shequ Xuexiao) 上海国际社区学校

SCIS is a community-oriented college preparatory school following the American curriculum. The student population is kept small in order to allow every student to shine, whether in the classroom or participating in co-curricular activities and character development programs. Education is state-of-the-art, with campus-wide wireless access and Apple Macbooks for each student.

Shanghai Rego International School, 189 Dong Zha Road, Minhang (5488 3431, www.srisrego.com). Shanghai Ruigao Guoji Xuexiao, 上海瑞金国际学校  (闵行 东闸路189号).
The National British Curriculum is offered alongside Dutch and German curricula. The academic program currently includes A-levels, although the IB Program will replace it beginning in September 2009. Among the co-curricular activities, the arts are emphasized.

Shanghai Singapore International School, 1455 Huajing Lu (6496 5550, www.ssis.com). Shanghai Xinjiapo Guoji Xuexiao, 上海新加坡国际学校  (华泾路1455号).
Core values of initiative, communication, collaboration, and commitment work together in shaping knowledgeable inquirers. Two campuses cover preschool through high school and offer programs in arts, music, drama, and athletics. The reputation of Singapore for strong science and math education is upheld here; this is reflected in course offerings and in the IB Program.

Western International School of Shanghai, 555 Lianmin Lu, Qingpu (6976 6388, www.wiss.cn). Shanghai Xihua Guoji Xuexiao, 上海西华国际学校 (青浦区徐泾镇联民路555号).
With an inquiry-based curriculum, WISS implements the IB Program for early and middle years; plans are in place to expand to through Year 13. With small class sizes, this school offers an interactive environment focused on producing inquiring and intellectually-engaged students. The purpose-built campus was designed by Weimar architects to accomodate a small but vibrant community.

Yew Chung International School, 1817 Huamu Lu (5033 1900, www.ycis-sh.com). Yaozhong Guoji Xuexiao, 耀中国际学校 (浦东花木路1817号).
YC has a unique and fully bilingual program. With branches throughout China and Hong Kong, the curriculum here unites Eastern and Western traditions in a multicultural environment. Students are taught a modified UK National Curriculum in both Chinese and English, and the IB Program is also available.

 
International Divisions of Local Schools

Fudan International School, 383 Guoquan Lu (5552 0127, www.fis.net.cn). Fudan Guoji Xuexiao, 复旦国际学校 (国权路383号).
FIS is the international division of the High School affiliated with Fudan, one of China’s top universities. A comprehensive Western curriculum and small AP Program are offered at this college preparatory boarding and day school.  Students are encouraged to do research with the resources of Fudan University at hand. A primary school will open in Fall 2009.

Shanghai Fudan-Vanke Experimental Private School, 263 Xiangzhan Lu, Minhang (6419 7597, www.vks.cn). Fudan Wanke Shiyan Xuexiao, 复旦万科实验学校 (闵行 星站路263号).
SVKS offers four different programs: one for non-native Mandarin speakers, one for fluent Mandarin speakers with some English language ability, one for students who can speak both English and Mandarin languages, and one for fluent Mandarin speakers. All students have classes in both languages in order to foster bilingualism. This is a day and boarding school for grades 1-9.

Shanghai High School International Division, 400 Shangzhong Lu (6476 5516, www.shsid.org). Shanghai Zhongxue Guojibu, 上海中学国际部 (上中路400号).
For senior students, this competitive school offers four tracks: a Mainland Chinese curriculum, Hong Kong curriculum, American/AP curriculum and the IB program. It shares a campus with the prestigious Shanghai High School. Mathematics, science and technology are stressed in order to produce students who are ready for the challenges of the future.

Shanghai Jincai High School International Division, 1289 Dingxiang Lu (6854 3533, www.jcid.cn). Shanghai Jincai Zhongxue Guojibu, 上海进才中学国际部 (丁香路1289号).
JCID is one of the first experimental high schools in Shanghai. International understanding is promoted through education, and there is a solid IB MYP, with plans to expand IB offerings at the high school level. The school’s English section is based on the American curriculum, while the Chinese section is designed for students whose native tongue is non-Chinese but plan to attend Chinese universities.

Shanghai United International School, 169 Qingtong Lu (5855 4588, www.smic-school.cn). Shanghai Minban Zhongxin Xuexiao, 上海民办中芯学校 (青桐路169号).
At this Chinese public school, the curriculum combines the IB Primary Years Program with the Chinese National Curriculum in the subjects of Mandarin and mathematics. Immersion learning in the primary and secondary schools generates bilingual and bi-cultural students.

YK Pao School, 155 Jiangsu Lu, June 1st Building (5237 8403, www.ykpaoschool.cn). Baoyugang Shiyan Xuexiao, 包玉刚实验学校  ( 江苏路155号六一楼).
Founded in memory of Sir Yue-Kong Pao, this school offers a Chinese academic program with a student-centered approach. There is an emphasis on learning across cultural boundaries, integrated curriculum with dual language immersion, and the development of the whole person. Students develop competency in English and Mandarin in both primary and secondary School.

The only facility in Shanghai specifically designed for foreign families and children with special learning needs. Intensive, daily programs are highly individualized in order to help each student reach his or her academic, emotional, behavioral and social goals. The school accommodates children from three years of age.
