Some practices in China are still at an infant stages: philanthropy, recycling… and trading secondhand goods. So, the Western-style garage or rubbish sale is a rare find. But thanks to enterprising Expat Women, there are several venues for renting or buying used kid items. And considering the restricted storage space available to most residents, that is a beautiful thing.

Proceeds from the sales go toward the support of an orphanage for blind children near Beijing.

* International Moms Support Group (groups.msn.com/imsgshanghai) holds a Spring and Fall ‘Bring and Buy Sale’ that features tables of both used goods and expat vendors selling new things. The tables are booked for a price, and an RMB 30 admission fee is charged. Proceeds go toward charities selected for each sale.

* My Second Hand (www.mysecondhand-sh.com) is a used goods store that has recently opened in Gubei. It pays in cash or store credit for good-quality used items.

* The Shanghai Craigslist (shanghai.craigslist.com.cn) and Asia Expat (shanghai.asiaxpat.com/classifieds) has multiple classifications of used goods, among them: household, appliances, furniture, and baby and kids goods.
* The ShanghaiMama’s online forum (groups.yahoo.com/group/ShanghaiMamas) often has postings flying about for used items, or postings looking for something to buy used.

* Shanghai Second Hand (www.shanghaisecondhand.com) is a fairly new store, located in Pudong, which buys, sells, and consigns used goods.

* Shanghai Toy Club (www.shanghaitoyclub.com.cn) rents everything from toys to gear by week or month. It will deliver for a charge.
