Shanghai 2009
Tuesday, 14 July 2009 07:07 Written by Mark Like A Local is a blog stuffed with pictures, videos, translated menus and detailed instructions on where, what and how to eat cheap local food. Here is a selection of its top recommendations: Chicken hot pot chain Ji Gong Bao 鸡公煲has over 80 branches in the city. One of the most central is basement Level 1, 770 Huaihuai Zhong Lu. Spicy chicken hot pot is the perfect dish for winter chills. Order small medium or large and choose your prefered level of spice. Excellent Family Soup Dumplings (Jia Jia Tang Bao 佳佳汤包) located at 90 Huanghe Lu, just to the north of Fengyang Lu, is the best place in town to enjoy xiaolongbao, a firm favorite among local delicacies. Grandma’s Noodles (A Niang Mian 阿娘面) at 9 Sinan Lu, near (just south of) Huaihai Lu, is probably the best place for noodles in Shanghai – if not the world. Noodles are served during three sittings, from 6:30am to 9:30am; 11am to 1:30pm; and 5pm to 7pm. It’s best to get there early to beat the crowds. Naughty Barbeque淘气烧烤, located at 4 Hefei Lu, west of Jinan Lu, is justly praised as the best place in town for meat on a skewer. Choose between an enormous range of meat, fish and vegetarian options, each costing from RMB 1-to-5. Lao Ke Le老克勒手工面馆, at Huanghe Lu, just north of Fengyang Lu, is named after the traditional Shanghai bohemians who helped open the city to the West. It specializes in cheap and tasty fusion fare, such as Egg-Noodles with Chicken in Spices & Fennel Sauce, fruit juices and smoothies and Deep-Fried Mozzaralla Cheese. North West Food Court (Dun Huang Xiao Tíng 敦煌小亭) is a popular food court restaurant occupying Basement Level 1, 580 Tianyaoqiao Lu, Xujiahui. It offers such ‘must-order’ dishes as Xinjiang noodles (qishan saozi mian 岐山哨子面) and lamb kebabs spiced with cumin (ziran yangrou jiamo 孜然羊肉夹馍).
