Malaysians are on to a good thing. Made up of an ethnic mix of Malays, Indians and Chinese, they celebrate pretty much every festival going. New Year comes four times a year (Chinese, Islamic, Hindu and January 1) and there are no less than 18 public holidays in this Southeast Asian country. In Shanghai, the expat population is largely made up of Chinese Malaysians, but that doesn’t stop them enjoying any and every opportunity for a party.

Sophisticate, stylish and, dare we say it… a bit sniffy, there’s not many nations who so proudly live up their stereotype. In Shanghai, the mark of our Gallic friends and their impeccable taste is in evidence everywhere - from the tree-lined streets of the former French Concession to the ever-expanding list of fine French wines on restaurant menus, and buildings such as the Shanghai Grand Theater and Pudong Airport, both of which were designed by French architects. Up to 15,000 French residents now live in the city that was once known as ‘the Paris of the Orient.’

The people from across the Pacific pond

It’s hard to know where to start  when it comes to describing Shanghai’s expatriate Americans. Hailing from a true melting pot of a country, they come in all shades of red, white and blue. But despite what Graham Greene may have written, we’ve not met a quiet American yet. Loud and proud, they are known for their directness, competitive spirit and contagious enthusiasm. There’s no shortage of them here in Shanghai and you’ll find them almost everywhere from Amcham to Zapatas. Heck, there’s even a Yank or two lurking in this magazine’s editorial department.

What lies behind all that bacon and beer?

Consistently ranked as the happiest nation on Earth (could it be all that Carlsberg?) it comes as no surprise that the Danes describe themselves as a joyful bunch. Sociable, warm and welcoming, a pioneering spirit has led to there being over 1,000 of them in the city, and all from a national population around a quarter of that of Shanghai.
