Don’t suffer in solitude in Shanghai

Living in Shanghai can be a stressful experience at the best of times.  For those carrying an additional burden such as depression, family conflict, addiction or any other psychological challenge the pressure can become unbearable. But don’t suffer alone. If you need mental health services, help is available in Shanghai.

Improving your posture

A good posture contributes to more than just an attractive appearance; it is actually good for you. Maintaining proper alignment of your spine prevents abnormal weight bearing across your joints, minimizes undue stress being loaded on your ligaments and keeps a healthy length-tension ratio between opposite muscle groups. Good posture is more efficient as it takes less energy for your muscles to maintain and thus reduces the chance of developing muscle fatigue and injuries from overuse.

If your posture does need correcting, you first need to find out what should be adjusted. Even for those of us who’ve been repetitively told by a friend or loved one to ‘straighten up,’ it’s not always clear what exactly is wrong with your posture. A physical therapist can assess and then identify what parts of your posture which may require correction.

A new you for the New Year

People form first impressions within fifteen seconds of meeting someone. It has become an incontrovertible truth that at work and socially, appearance is increasingly linked to success. Consequently, plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine have become increasingly popular and available, not just to stars in Hollywood or Hong Kong, but in most big cities worldwide, including Shanghai.

Prevention not cure. The what and when for regular checkups.

With the effects of Christmas excesses still lingering (particularly around the gut), the dawning of a new decade is a good time to ring the changes. All around the world people resolve to visit a gym, give up the booze and stop scoffing junk food. But staying healthy isn't just about diet and exercise. Preventative medicine experts recommend a few more steps to keep in tip-top shape. Add this set of guidelines to your resolutions and hopefully next year you'll have nothing to improve. Remember, these serve only as a general outline: you have a unique body, so be sure to discuss with your doctor what is best for you.

Dealing with stress the TCM way

According to traditional Chinese medicine, stress affects the liver. The function of the liver is to regulate and guarantee the flow of Qi, the vital substance of life energy in the body. The liver is also responsible for our emotions and the regulation of our feelings. When the liver is not functioning properly, Qi will not be flowing freely and a disturbance of Qi can lead to a number of symptoms, from bad appetite to acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, restless sleep, headaches, back pains, shortness of breath, palpitations and depression.
