Magic carpet ride - Aladdin the pantomime

Get set for an Arabian night as this month Zuloo Theatre Productions is bringing the panto to town once again. “Oh no it isn’t!” I hear you cry. It bloody is, I tell you – Aladdin is all set to rub lamps, ride carpets, rule genies, rile baddies and rush after princesses. We caught up with the man himself (only in this case, he is actually a she – year 9 student at the British International School, Maria Mamede)…

What is it like to play Aladdin?
I wouldn’t say it is weird, but it is definitely a new and enjoyable experience. Since I found out that I would be playing Aladdin, I’ve started to observe the way my brother walks and talks – picking up tips!

The lowdown on the city’s latest theme park

The first reports after Shanghai’s latest, greatest amusement park opened in August, a terror-inducing 12 failures or breakdowns during its 'soft' opening (that's right, even amusement parks have soft openings in Shanghai), had us thinking Death Valley might have been a more suitable name than Happy Valley. So forgive us for allowing them a few months to settle into their skin before we were ready to be scared out of ours. But we’ve finally taken the plunge, and the plummets…

The Shanghai Wild Animal Park isn’t half its cracked up to be

While the one-legged wobbling act may be a flamingo’s standard stance, when we saw these pink birds welcoming us to the Shanghai Wildlife Park we couldn’t help feeling it was to minimize exposure to the maloderous marsh they were standing in. Sorry to say, this set the tone. The entire complex seems a little icky, a little shoddy, as if the keepers no longer care how the place is being run or maintained. Really now, the city of Shanghai can do much, much better.

This month’s topic was ‘Halloween’ and the winner is John Patrick Barrett of the Shanghai Community International School.

Halloween has lost much of its spiritual value in the West while, even in a rapidly modernizing China, festivals for the dead still hold great significance. When someone dies in China, it is not at all like the slow, despondent period that Western culture goes through, but more a celebration, where the Chinese respect, forgive and thank their dead and consider that they are in a better place and are happier than when they were on earth. The Chinese also have special celebrations for people who are already in the spirit world, were not buried, respected or died an unusual death.
