Keep your kids active this summer season with an array of activities

With dozens of summer programs and camps around Shanghai, it’s easy to stave off that summer slump and keep your kids academically, athletically and culturally engaged. Here are our choices…

MUSIC
Your aspiring performers can learn the ins-and-outs of performance, from putting on musicals to jamming along to jazz.

JZ School
This year-round music school is offering special summer programs for all ages, including a musical theater program featuring The Lion King for ages 6-8 and an intensive jazz camp for teenagers16 and older.

Rainbow Music Studio
Both private and group lessons run throughout the summer. The studio teaches both Chinese and Western instruments and music. Pricing starts at RMB120 for a half hour, RMB210 for the whole hour.

SPORT
Keep your children physically fit, off the couch and away from the television with these athletic and sports program.

Sport for Life
Will be offering five-day sport camps throughout the city. Prices depend on the sport and location but generally range from RMB1,250-1,900.

Active Kidz

This non-profit sports program offers a variety of camps beginning on June 22. They also offer lessons in taekwondo, kung fu and yoga.

Multisport
For children aged 4-12, offering five-day long athletic camps and creative activities. RMB2,200. www.multisport.com.cn

ART
These programs are a great creative outlet and help develop an early appreciation for visual and performing arts.

The Studio
This two-week course aims to help develop a fine appreciation for art and includes a hands-on painting on canvas workshop and field trip to a local gallery. RMB2000, all materials included.

Kid’s Gallery

While this center also offers weeklong programs in visual arts, their one-hour workshops (RMB850) and two-hour camps (RMB1,800) focus on the performing arts.

Angels Kindergarten
Trilingual programs with English-, French- and Chinese-speaking instructors, this program offers weeklong performing art camps for children aged 2-12, starting at RMB850 per camp.

MANDARIN
“When in China…” Learning Mandarin is one of the best windows into the culture and practices of this great civilization. As with all languages, it’s easiest to start learning earlier rather than later.

Mandarin Family
Their summer program, “Chinese your summer cool,” offers Chinese language and cultural instruction in tai chi, traditional painting and others. Ages 4-14.

OTHER
Don’t feel limited by the usual summer programs, Shanghai also offers activities for children of varied interests, from building robots to cooking.

Ruby’s Party Summer Fun 4 Kids
This summer school caters to a younger crowd, 4-8yrs, and offers basic arts and crafts, dancing and cooking. Classes are bilingual and run from 9am-3.30pm. RMB2,000.
