Bund backpacker institution Captain’s Bar is so refreshingly lacking in pretension that we thought it deserved a second look. Ignore the dodgy lift and skanky staircase – it’s about the destination not the journey. The decor looks like the set of Gilligan’s Island and the abundance of backpackers make it more like a beach bar than a Bund bar, but the uninterrupted view of the Lujiazui skyline from the roof of Captain’s Hostel washes away a multitude of sins, especially come dusk when the neon lights start to kick in across the river. A modest food menu is limited to some mediocre pizzas and pasta dishes (RMB40-60), but the drinks (RMB40/45 for draft Tiger or Tsingtao, or for bottles of Corona, Heineken, etc.,) are attractively priced thanks to daily happy hour deals, Monday 2-for-1 deals (4-8pm) 20 percent off 12pm-12mn on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
