Jishi 吉士酒家
With only 10-15 tables, it's tiny and unassuming. Yet it's a destination for Shanghai A-listers and expats alike. Accept no substitutes, there are New Jishi restaurants throughout town. They are NOT the same thing.
Don’t miss: Their stir-fried river prawns, hongshao rou.

41 Tianping Lu, by Huaihai Lu, 6282 9260 (Reservations essential)
Bao Luo 保罗酒家
Bao Luo is legendary. For the past two decades it has been a destination for weddings and birthday parties and with good reason, the food is great and it's open 'til the wee hours.
Don’t miss: Swiss beef tenderloin deep fried and sauteed with sweet soy and the best shenjian bao outside of Yang's.

Fu1088 福1088
Located in an old Spanish style villa, Fu1088 is a slice of pre-war Shanghai. It offers authentic Shanghainese cuisine such as smoked fish and drunken chicken. “It’s a nostalgic place, reminds me of the food I had decades ago”, says local food critic Jiang Liyang.
Don’t miss: Drunken chicken, smoked fish.

Yuan Yuan 圆苑
We know it's a chain restaurant, but in this case you can't have too much of a good thing. Sleek, modern and with great atmosphere and service. What's not to love?
Don’t miss: Hongshao rou.

Xiao Nan Guo 小南国
This local chain restaurant offers delicious yet affordable Shanghainese cuisine. The constant quality of the dishes, elegant decor and the impeccable service make this a primo place for Shanghai’s expense account crowd.
Don’t miss: Tofu with crab meat.

Mei Long Zhen 梅陇镇酒家
Established in 1938, Mei Long Zhen serves Shanghainese classics balanced out with Sichuan standards. The interior is richly decorated with Qing Dynasty style red and gold paintings and exquisite wooden sculptures.
Don’t miss: Crab and pork meatballs, crystal shrimp.

Lan Xin Restaurant 兰心餐厅
It may not be much on the eyes, but that's usually a good sign in this city. Order from their hand-written menu and you're immediately transported to Grandma's kitchen.
Don’t miss: Dry braised fish.

Jade Garden 苏浙汇
This popular Shanghai chain restaurant offers authentic local cuisine, classic and stylish décor and attentive service. Nearly everything on the menu is solid.

Shanghai Old Station 上海老站
Located in the former monastery of St.Mary in Xujiahui, this nostalgic restaurant offers history lovers charming atmosphere and authentic Shanghainese cuisine.
Don't miss: Dining in a converted train carriage once owned by Empress Dowager Cixi and Soong Ching Ling (reservations essential).

Lv Bo Lang 绿波廊
One of the oldest restaurants in the Old Town, Lv Bo Lang has become the 'face' of Shanghainese cuisine, so to speak. It’s a common stop for politicians and celebrities alike.
Don’t miss: Mei mao su (eyebrow-shaped pastry), gui hua la gao (osmanthus cake). Both were favorites of Bill Clinton on his last visit.
