Last Sunday saw cricketing contest the China Cup, Beijing Lions vs. Shanghai Dragons take place on on the Dulwich College fields in Jinqiao. Predicted thunderstorms failed to interrupt the50 over contest in which home favourites Shanghai Dragons, the series leaders, comprehensively beaten by a strengthened and confident Beijing Lions side.
Beijing won the toss and opted to bat for the morning session. Even a significant display by the Dragons’ captain Jon Newton, taking 3 wickets and conceding only 33 runs in 8 overs, failed to tame the Lions. Three partnerships featuring captain Simon Pendergast, Martin Wareham and Richard McQuillian secured over 100 runs for the Lions and despite the Dragon’s Sameer Jolly taking an additional two wickets in his fourth over the Lions completed the 50 overs at 219 for 8.

The Dragon’s innings got off to a poor start with batsmen one, two and three all dismissed within single figures. A solid partnership between Newton and Ali Butt kept Shanghai in the match but after 30 overs the wickets began to fall again ending the Dragons’ innings at 154 all out in 42 overs. The afternoon saw McQuillian earn the Man of the Match title with two wickets, a catch and a run-out including the scalp of Jon Newton, the leading batsman of the match, at 40 runs.
Previously 3-1 up in the series, the Dragons now face a tour to Beijing later in the season with the threat of the Lions drawing level.
Match result:
Beijing 219 for 8
Shanghai 154 all out
