Don’t be afraid to get on the bus in Shanghai

So, Shanghai taxi fares are going up by a whole kuai from this month onwards. It’s a bank-breaking outrage, so now that it’s officially the pissing-down-with-rain season we’ve decided to man up and start taking buses. Seems it’s not that scary after all. Here are some routes you might need:

No. 43: The shopping route
This route takes you from the shopping mecca of Xujiahui all the way to the fabric market. It also stops on Huangpi Nan Lu, a few minutes away from Xintiandi.
RMB 2, pay the conductor, 4am-11.25pm

No. 20: The breath of fresh air route
Hit up the city’s green lungs on this bus, which links three parks: Zhongshan Park, Jing’an Park and People’s Square (Chengdu Bei Lu) before terminating at the Bund (Jiujiang Lu).
RMB 2, Automatic ticket machine, 5am-11.15pm

No. 925: The airport route
No more waiting at that taxi queue from hell after your holidays. This bus runs right from People’s Square to Hongqiao Airport. Major stops are at Nanjing Xi Lu (by Shimen Yi Lu), Huashan Lu (by Zhenning Lu), Dingxi Lu (by Kaixuan Lu) and Shanghai Zoo.
RMB 2-4, pay the conductor, 6am-11pm

No. 24: The food route
This route takes you from Yu Garden (on Doushi Jie) where you can slurp on Da Xiehuang Tangbao, and heads north of Jing’an District. The bus stops at Xintiandi for posh nosh, Huaihai Lu for mid-range food chains and Wujiang Lu food street (Shimen Yi Lu/Nanjing Xi Lu).
RMB 2, Automatic Ticket Machine, 5am-11,20pm

No. 1: The sightseeing route
Shanghai’s first red double-decker sightseeing bus. We found it extremely useful (and you can sit on the open deck and pretend to be a tourist). It sets off from Shanghai Indoor Stadium, (Longmen Lu by Huaihai Zhong Lu) taking you through all the popular attractions such as Xujiahui, the French Concession, Huaihai Lu, Yu Garden and People’s Square.
RMB 3, Automatic Ticket Machine, 8am-9pm
