We've got the editors from That's Shanghai and Urbanatomy.com to choose their favorite articles from 2009. And they're sharing their choices with you as a little Christmas gift. It's kind of what magazines and websites do at the end of the year isn't it? Aren't you lucky...

Name: Jade Bremner
Job: Life & Style Editor
Nickname: The Boozehound Newshound

1. Oasis - Indefinitely Maybe (by Jade Bremner & Helen Elfer)
The interview with Liam and Noel before the Oasis gig was canceled, published online in March

Opener: Noel: Hello? | Helen/Jade: Hello? | Noel: Are you on speakerphone? | Helen: We are. | Noel: I can barely hear a word you’re saying. | Helen: Is that any better? | Noel: ??? | Helen: Oh my god, oh my god! They’ll phone back wont they? | Jade: I hope so | Helen: Oh my God. I just hung up on Noel Gallagher. | Jade: Er…fuck…

Random quote: Noel: Times of crisis usually bring out the best in music, fashion and politics…I hope the financial crisis gets a bit worse; at least we’ll get a few good albums out of it.

Why Jade chose it: "One of the funniest interviews I've ever done. They live up to every stereotype you associated with them from their journalist-hating to the fact that they know how to get a quote."

2. A fool's guide to the fabric market (By Jade Bremner)
688 Lujiabang Lu made easy just for you, published in the Life & Style section of the March issue

Urbanatomy has trailed the fabric market so you don't have to, offering you the ultimate guide to surviving the fabric market. Read on for tips of where to find the best silk cloth, buttons, dressing gowns and much more...

Random quote: 210 – Ashley makes T-shirts and cotton items and she will copy your favorites. | 213 – Xing Qi Cloth shop makes evening dresses and fashion dresses to fit. | 236 – Cloth Transportation of Chongwen sells feather boas, bright colored lycra, and sequined material. | 264 – Jim specializes in traditional Chinese clothes to fit. | 265 – Xiao Le is the shirt guru; get them in all different colors and shapes (tailored for men and women).

Why Jade chose it: "Because it's one of the most useful things we've ever done [and gets pretty much the most hits online - Ed.], cheers for all the help from the likes of Bevvo for all the tips."

3. Diving into Atlantis - Qiandao Lake (by Jade Bremner)
Exploring the depths of Qiandao Lake, published in the June issue's Life & Style Section

Opener: Apparently, we know more about the moon’s surface than what lies beneath the Earth’s waters. Yet one thing we know for sure: hidden peacefully under the 576sqm Qingdao Lake is the dormant city of Shi Cheng.

Random quote: The lake had good visibility and was very clean. “It’s where the bottled water Nongfu Spring comes from,” says Paul. “In the shallow parts you can see schools of fish and shrimps.” All this sounded lush, but then we were informed that some parts of the lake drop to 120 meters. At that moment, a spot of panic set in. We were voluntarily jumping into an unknown abyss.

Why Jade chose it: "You actually discover stuff under the water here. It's amazing. There are not many places in the world where you can be an actual real explorer."

4. Cosmetic Surgery Soars (by Jade Bremner)
Why cosmetic surgery is on the rise in Shanghai, published in the April issue

Opener: The economic recession does not appear to have had much impact on our client figures,” says Dr. Sheena Burnell from Shanghai East Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Clinic. “This is quite common in all countries offering these types of services as people seek to give themselves a ‘boost’ with something, be it surgery or just some Botox.”

Random quote: In China it is commonly agreed that double eyelid surgery, which makes the eye much rounder and more ‘Westernized’, is the most popular surgery of choice. Shockingly, the second most popular surgery is thought to be hymen reconstruction, for those who wish to keep up appearances by appearing to be a virgin (presumably for their wedding night). The surgery at Northwest University in Xi’an offers a 50 percent discount to students for this very procedure.

Why Jade chose it: "Isn't it fascinating just how many girls get their hymens repaired in China..."

5. Review: Handsome Furs Live (by Jade Bremner)
Review of the Canadian band at Yuyintang, published online in September

Opener: Yuyintang was heaving with sweaty, rowdy, bouncing, (mostly Canadian sounding) laowai’s last Saturday for a live show that was long fucking overdue in this city (in our humble opinion). Husband and wife duo the Handsome Furs headlined after a decent little warm up set from local favorites Boys Climbing Ropes. Xiao Punk was on glorious form, sporting her infamous Karen O haircut, bouncing away, head back, jaw open, and wailing like a woman possessed. The crowd was certainly moist and the ceilings dripping by the time they’d finished.

Random quote: The beat rolling again and the couple, between head banging, would go in for a rock and roll public grope. Some couples like rubber, some like swinging, some like necking each other while doing a rock show. It’s all good.

Why Jade chose it:"It's the best gig I've everbeen to in Shanghai. Awesome."

6. China's Fashion 25 (by Rosemary Zhu and the That's Shanghai team)
The lowdown on the 25 most influential people in Chinese fashion, the November cover story of That's Shanghai

Opener: Forget the phrase ‘Made in China’ you should be saying ‘Created in China.’ As the world’s largest textiles manufacturer, and one of just a handful of countries that continue to steadily grow in the face of global recession, China has emerged as the brightest star in the fashion world firmament. Domestic labels are setting their creative sights on the cravings of some 1.4 billion consumers. Chinese supermodels are gracing the catwalks of New York and Milan. Shanghainese designers (take a bow, Qiu Hao) are winning international awards.

Random quote: Angelica Cheung, Editor-in-Chief, Vogue: I think China constantly surprises people. Things change all the time. You will see more of an extension of international brands in China because China has become an focal point in terms of expansion and development for these brands.

Why Jade chose it: "It proves that China's not all about importing brands it's now exporting too."

The Oasis interview was awesome, love that quote, too bad we never got to see them here (shakes fist impotently at whatever agency cancelled that gig)
