Tuesday, 05 January 2010 03:01 Written by Jade Bremner & Rosemary Zhu The brave men in the local emergency services It takes a rare breed of person to put their life at risk and jump into a burning building, or pull an unconscious driver from a crushed car moments before it explodes, or to safely dispose of leaking toxic chemicals, or to talk someone out of a suicide attempt. We met two of these amazing men. They told us about the perils of being in the emergency services, and what it takes to be a real Shanghai hero. Shanghai fireman Zhou Qinyang, originally from Anhui Province, has been in the job for 12 years and has, in his own words, seen it all. On a monthly salary of RMB5,000 he lives in the fire station with another 80 firefighters. Their living quarters are like dormitories, with eight people in a room – all men. They eat, sleep and train together; Qinyang is on call 24 hours a day. |
