Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:03 Written by Tom Gurney Earlier than usual April showers caused havoc with the SIFL fixtures on Saturday. Games were called off at Century Park on the Friday whilst the two noon Tianma fixtures were canceled 60 minutes into the game. The Beaver-Krauts game was 2-2 at the time, but ReUnited were leading the Voodoo 2-0. SIFL schedule guru Marcus Pizzato has taken time off work this week to rework these games keep your eyes on the calendar for when the games will be rearranged to. Maybe Roland Broughton's post-match refereeing rant was misinterpreted by the rain gods? Who knows. One thing we do know is that ReUnited's manager Sebastian Becker was seen purchasing a voodoo doll on Sunday morning, though the target of his rage - Ned Kelly - shall remain anonymous. Two games involving the Premiership's top four did take place on Saturday. Top of the bill the encounter between top of the table Puxi Lions and the Shooters. Read more

Three competitions, five games: the SIFL season recommenced last Saturday after a two-week break for the Chinese New Year. Rested and ready for action, nine teams made the trip to Tianma and Century park to commence battle. Nine teams? Yes, the Crazy Turks unable to field a team forfeited their game to the Anzacs, 5:0. The day's schedule included the first Hebiguchi Cup semi-final. Could the Lions keep their treble dreams alive? The Premiership saw one match, arguably the first six-pointer this season as the Beaver crossed swords with the Krauts. Elsewhere the Voodoo Child took on the Sauerkrauts whilst the Coreans pitted their wits against Shanghai 2000 at Century Park. The extra break on Saturday allowed an extra few hours cramming at the Shanghai library. Our congratulations go out to first ever SIFL quiz night winners. To find out what happened elsewhere, read on. In the first Hebiguchi Cup semi final Japan were up against the Premiership leaders, the Puxi Lions. Not only did they enter the game as favourites, the Lions had run out 6-0 winners against Japan just before the New Year's break. The opportunity to exact revenge, and give them a chance to claim their first silverware since 2005, was too good to turn down for Japan. Penalty kicks separated the teams with the Japanese holding their nerve after the game finished 2-2 in the normal 90. Japan's goals came from Kichiro Takeuchi and an own goal whilst the Lions' replies came from Frederic Dron and top scorer Allan Mendel. Uzair Rawji secured the Lions MoM whilst Keitaro Honbo picked up the award Japan. The second semi final between the Shooters and the Cosmos will take place in early April.

Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:02 Written by Tom Gurney The last round of SIFL fixtures in the year of the ox took place at Tianma on Saturday with things beginning to hot up in both leagues. Would the Azzuri or the Lions (pictured) be top of the Premiership at the New Year? Would the Vikings go the 2009/10 season without a win? Would ReUnited close the gap at the top of the First and would the Voodoo continue to self-destruct? Would Korea be allowed to score a penalty rebound in the 49th minute of the first half? Is Oranje’s SIFL history lost forever? Who is the league’s leading scorer? And who is the SIFL’s dirtiest player? Answers to these questions, and more, can be found below. Gong Xi Fa Cai! Premiership With 989 minutes of football played, the Vikings had just one point to show for their endeavours. It has not been the Vikings’ finest season thus far and it was not a good time for SIFL’s worst defence to face the league’s most prolific strike force. But new years are all about hope, and by securing their first three points of the season in the final minute of the year of the ox, the Vikings have given themselves some hope for survival this season. They defeated the Azzuri 3:2 on Saturday, thanks to goals from top scorer Francesco Ammirata and two from Xiao Wang. Ammirata’s performance earned him the MoM honours for Vikings. Guillaume Leclercq and Adam Kluger scored for the Azzuri whilst Wilson Marchionatti won their MoM. Defeat for the Azzuri gave the Lions a chance to be top at the New Year, whilst the victory for the Vikings threw the basement battle wide open.

Thursday, 28 January 2010 03:01 Written by Tom Gurney There was something for everyone at Tianma last Saturday. The Heb cup quarter finals took place with four teams' dreams of a Tianma day out that would somehow be different from other days out at Tianma quashed. For those hoping for some giant killings, the SIFL qualification matches took place. And for those who wanted some good old fashioned SIFL league action, the Krauts were on hand to entertain a Vikings side that, going into Saturday's fixture, were pointless - a word not typically associated with this weekly write up. Find out what went on on Saturday by reading on... Hebiguchi Cup In the Heb cup what should have been the game of the day turned out to be little more than a stroll in the park for the Shooters. 5:0 they ran out winners against the Azzuri. Michael McGirr showed why he was snapped up in the January sales, he scored two on his second start for the Shooters. Jon Banks picked up another to add to this seasons tally (12 in 9 games) but Roland Broughton (MoM) remains hot on his heels thanks to his 2 strikes (now 11 from 10). Whilst the Shooters dreams of a treble remain in tact, the Azzuri will claim they can now focus on the league. Andrea Vanini's MoM was the only real positive to come out of the match for the Italians.
