Football - SIFL
Tuesday, 24 November 2009 04:11 Written by Tom Gurney League titles are not won in November but they most certainly can be lost. Top of the table clashes in both divisions lived up to the pre-match hype last weekend and proved great adverts for the SIFL. Question marks over the Shooters’ title credentials were raised on Sunday morning after they shipped in four to this season’s surprise package, the Puxi Lions. The excitement did not stop there; Saturday’s seven matches saw twenty four goals in total. Find out all about them below. New Shanghai Shooters keeper Christian Banyard was left questioning the sanity of his summer switch after shipping in four this weekend. The Puxi Lions did not need the luck of the Irish to win, being head and shoulders above the Shooters on the day. Three second half goals secured the points, as did a man of the match display from the Lions’ Allen Mendel. Franz Polydor did the bulk of the damage netting twice, whilst goals by Julian Chevallier and an own goal proved to be the icing on the cake for the premiership leaders. Roland Broughton’s grabbed a consolation for the Shooters but proved insufficient as they crashed to their second defeat of the season. Four wins and a draw have cemented the Puxi Lions’ position at the top. The Shooters in contrast are left languishing in fourth and go in to the winter fixture period knowing that anything other than maximum points could end their title aspirations. There is little to cheer in the Viking camp these days. Not only did they lose their sixth game of the season to the Krauts on Saturday 2-1, but their own players have now started scoring against them! A stand out display from Toke Christensen was not enough for the Vikings and a second half strike from Christian Kortman, his third of the campaign for the Krauts, proved the difference between the two sides. Francesco Ammirata’s pulled a goal back for the Vikings but it was not enough. The result leaves the Vikings at the foot of the table and the only team in the SIFL without a point. In the Premiership’s other game this weekend, the Beaver comfortably saw off the Cosmos 4-1 in the day’s other 11 o clock kick off. Sam Russell’s heroics, picking up his fourth man of the match award in four games for the Cosmos, were not enough to stave off defeat. The first win of the season for the Beaver pushed them above the Cosmos and Oranje, who had a rest week. In the first division Reunited were on the verge of producing one of the upsets of the season before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory early Saturday morning as they went down 2-1 to league’s run-away leaders the Voodoo. Adebowale Adebowale’s first half lob, his ninth in four first division matches, put Reunited one up at half time and it really should have been more. Reunited’s man-of-the-match Kevin Milot was unable to conjure up a second goal for Reunited as wasteful finishing allowed the Voodoo to regain a grasp on the game. SIFL’s joint leading marksmen Ned Kelly netted a break-away goal before Phil Boyle’s persistence ensured an improbable victory in the final minutes for the Voodoo, capitalising on a defensive mix up and securing yet another three points for the Voodoo to send them six points clear at the top. In the other morning kick off, the Sauerkrauts overcame a spirited performance from the Voodoo Child to shade a one nil victory. Kuno v. Gizycki proved the difference between the two sides, netting the game’s only goal and picking up the man of the match for the Sauerkrauts. Good performances from Steve Miranda and Voodoo Child man-of-the-match Andy Hamilton were not enough for the Child. The defeat leaves manager Julian Goodes with much to contemplate as the league heads towards Christmas. A goal scorer ought to be top of his Christmas wish-list. Voodoo Child have the league’s weakest attack, netting just three goals so far this season. Urbanatomy congratulates Chris Kincaid, the Voodoo Child’s evergreen utility man who this weekend became the league’s, and quite possibly Shanghai’s, oldest playing sportsmen. Talking of old men, Rick Howard had a debut to forget on Saturday, Anzacs’ newest recruit was unable to stop a Corean tsunami in the day’s afternoon fixture. Goal’s from Xing Jing, Qing Yunliu, Zhi Junzhang and Daniel Yoo helped Corea to their third win out of four and moved them up level on points with Reunited in second place. Anzacs remain in fourth place having picked up seven points from their first five matchs. The Crazy Turks chalked up their second win of the season, running in three goals in the process and comfortably disposing of Long Tang by 3-1. Goal’s from Emre Gurel, Ekin Altun and Mehmet Soylemez secured the points for the Turks in a hotly contested game that saw Philip Kontos pick up a red for two yellow cars. The result means the Turks leap-frog Long Tang and leaves them trailing the Anzacs, Sauerkrauts and Shanghai 2000 by just one point.
