Wednesday, 28 October 2009 03:10 Written by Urbanatomy Ahead of the WGC-HSBC Champions golf on November 5 - 8 at Sheshan Golf Club, Australian Geoff Ogilvy talks... As we know you participated in almost all previous HSBC Champions; why do you attach such an importance to the tournament? Actually I have only played in one HSBC Champions and that was last year. My first impressions were great though as I really enjoyed the week and knew I would be back. Last year I finished Tied 3rd missing the play off by one shot so although I didn’t quite pull off a win, I felt very at home and felt the course suited my game pretty well. Now the tournament has been elevated to a World Golf Championship, it makes it even more important on our schedules as we are all looking to win WGC titles and it would be fantastic to win the first WGC-HSBC Champions in China, that’s for sure.
You have many opportunities to take part in tournaments in China each year; how is the HSBC Champions different? I do play in many events around the world but I guess the difference to other events I’ve played in the region is that the HSBC Champions has an amazing depth of quality of field and has attracted most of the top players to include it in their schedules since it begun in 2005. Obviously it is very well run and the course is in great condition which makes it even more appealing. Of the previous HSBC Champions you participated in, which year left you with the strongest impression? Can you share with us some anecdotes from that year? Just what I said before really – the one HSBC Champions tournament I played was fantastic, well run and I loved spending time in Shanghai. It has such a fun atmosphere and the enthusiasm of the sponsors, organizers and spectators made it a really special week. Have you set a clear goal for yourself before this year’s tournament? Well, I have won three World Golf Championships so I will certainly be hoping to win this one but it is a really strong field so it will certainly be a tough task. LINKS Which player do you most hope to compete against in the same team? Why? I don’t mind who I play with – it is interesting to meet new people but at the same ime I love playing with my mates from Australia, the USA and European Tour too. What do you think are the differences between competing in China and other places around the world? I think the fans make it different – golf is relatively new in China so excitement is still building and you can just sense that they are having a great time and they are so appreciative of our good shots. Also, I have also always experienced fantastic hospitality in China and the food is great too. Do you pay attention to any Chinese players? Who? I am excited to see how the Chinese invited players get on in the field – what a great experience it will be for them to play in a World Golf Championship in front of their home fans Have you paid attention to junior Chinese players? In terms of nurturing young talent, what experience do you think the HSBC Champions can lend? I hope I get to spend some time with them – I know that HSBC have a junior programme in place in China to bring through the talented juniors and there are new courses and facilities being built all the time so, along with them getting to come and watch the world’s best players at Sheshan, I think China’s juniors should soon be appearing alongside us on the Tour! Do you think a dark horse will appear in this year’s tournament? I think that there are too many top ranked players in the field for there to be any big surprises. The World Golf Championships are the most important events after the Majors and the best players make it their business to win them. I think we’ll see a top 10 player take the title and I am certainly hoping it is me.
