Thursday, 03 December 2009 02:12 Written by Cordelia O'Hare They think it’s all over... Well they would be right: it is. After a cracking season, we can announce that this year's Shanghai Bei champions are the Zhude Monks, having beaten the Hermit Crabs 23-10 in a very exciting and evenly matched fixture last Saturday. Hangzhou are leading the fair play trophy so far, boasting a squeaky clean record with no cards of any color. A couple of matches are still to be played, but no results can knock the Monks or Crabs of their leading spots. So, the table with just two matches left to play… Read more

Wednesday, 25 November 2009 10:11 Written by Cordelia O'Hare Last weekend saw only one of the scheduled matches take place as Hangzhou were suffering too many injuries and SUS had exams (that suck’s, man). The match that did go ahead was a cracker though - the Monks trounced Nantong on their own turf. This means they snatch the top spot on the table from the reluctant claws of the Hermit Crabs as they creep ahead on number of tries. The points as they stand as follows:

Sunday, 04 October 2009 12:10 Written by Urbanatomy A depleted Hermits team travelled to play Nantong to play in the latest round of the Shanghai Bei last Saturday. Struggling to field a full team, sterling work by Matt Froman and Norman Green in the bars of Shanghai on Friday night found some new faces to bring the team to 14 people.

Wednesday, 30 September 2009 08:09 Written by Urbanatomy The SHCs are a group of foreign two-legged rugby nuts that love to do battle with the local Chinese and Japanese teams. They also enjoy hosting foreign clubs and national teams. Back in 2006 they enjoyed the company of some ancient French Tahitians, a group of youthful Canadians and a team of grey haired Kiwis. Unlike their eight legged namesakes, they endeavour not to be (b)eaten, and succeed most of the time, winning the Yellow Sea Cup last year.

Wednesday, 30 September 2009 07:09 Written by Urbanatomy Now in its third year, the Shanghai Bei is a rugby union fifteens tournament held across China’s eastern coast. Teams host the competition in their home grounds, across Shanghai city and adjoining Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Since its inception, the number of players and the support has grown significantly and the tournament is now one of the biggest in Shanghai. With teams composed of all Chinese, all foreign and a mixture of players, this year’s competition is pleased to welcome 3 new teams: the Shanghai Hermit Crabs, the Shanghai Rhinos and Shanghai Zhudi Monks. A sign of how quickly the cup is growing in popularity, with both players and supporters. SHANGHAI BEI TEAMS: Shanghai Hermit Crabs Shanghai Sports University (Chinese sport students team) Japanese Twin Dragons (Shanghai based Japanese team) Nantong Tigers (Chinese based, expat supported team) Hangzhou Harlequins (Expat based team) Zhudi Monks (expat & Chinese team with based in the Shanghai American School) Shanghai Rhinos (Chinese team) The first half of the season is over and the Monks are leading the field. But all teams are still to play their second matches, and if the Hermits beat the Monks then there will either be a playoff game or it will come down to a point differential! Exciting times. Monks v Hermits is on November 28th and will be the best game of the series - definitely one to watch!
