Wednesday, 30 September 2009 08:09 Written by Urbanatomy The SHCs are a group of foreign two-legged rugby nuts that love to do battle with the local Chinese and Japanese teams. They also enjoy hosting foreign clubs and national teams. Back in 2006 they enjoyed the company of some ancient French Tahitians, a group of youthful Canadians and a team of grey haired Kiwis. Unlike their eight legged namesakes, they endeavour not to be (b)eaten, and succeed most of the time, winning the Yellow Sea Cup last year. These crustaceans like to drink, and could show a fish a thing or two. They are regularly seen at boat races and the police haven't yet been able to stop them performing ritual tequila suicides. Guinness is the preferred beverage of these hairy little fellows, especially on International Sevens weekend, Yellow Sea Cup Saturdays and ANZ Challenge Cup day, when the Hairy Crabs take on the mighty Chinese national team. All in all, the Shanghai Hairy Crabs are an awesome community that allows these poor, hard done by and over-worked laowai to regain some perspective from a Chinese working week. You can try to beat them, but you'll just end up joining them. The Hairy Crabs play in the Yellow Sea Cup, an international Series between: -Shanghai Hairy Crabs -Beijing Devils -Seoul Survivors -Guangzhou Rams -Macau Guangzhou is coming to tackle the Crabs on 24th October and they head up to Beijing for the final on 7th November. The Guinness Shanghai Hairy Crabs Rugby Club is pleased to welcome rugby players of all ages, sizes and levels of ability to come and enjoy the atmosphere of the Shanghai Hairy Crabs. Training is every Monday (Circuits) and Thursday and they have matches throughout the year on Saturdays. More info at www.rugbyshanghai.com
